Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a dare for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard biological terror, but inside Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when the couple transition from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He fears the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience today.
